Vocabuo

Vocabuo Is Now Free on the Web

I’ve decided to make the web version of Vocabuo completely free.

How does it differ from the mobile version?

The mobile version has a freemium tier, whereas the web version is completely free. You can still use both versions free of charge, but some features are locked on mobile. These include images, audio, unlimited sentences, and more.

The web browser, YouTube viewer, and ebook reader do not work on the web version. That’s unfortunately a technical limitation of the technology used, but I might be able to solve this in the future.

Text input is much better on the web version. I suggest switching the answer mode to keyboard and then checking your answers by typing. For more advanced users, you can try the card type where you have to translate the whole sentence.

How do I know it won’t be paid in the future?

You don’t, but I can promise. The only things that might be subject to change are voice answers and the AI tutor. I’m willing to pay a few hundred dollars a month for them (that’s already supported by the premium app users), but if it goes beyond a reasonable amount, I might introduce something like “bring your own OpenAI API key” for these two features.

That sounds too good to be true.

It does. My idea is that enough free web users will decide to download the mobile app and get the subscription, which will hopefully cover the costs for the free users.
